Frequently asked questions

  • Is the fog dangerous for health?

Made from food-grade glycol (sucrose, kaolin, magnesium oxide), certified non-toxic by the University of Crete and CE compliant. Direct and prolonged exposure may nonetheless cause temporary irritation of the eyes and throat — the device must never be triggered while people are inside a closed room.

  • Is it dangerous for my pets?

No. The fog is non-toxic. The smoke smell naturally causes animals to retreat to another room. Always provide an escape route (door left ajar).

  • Does the fog leave marks on furniture?

Thanks to the built-in filter, Smoke-Defender drastically reduces residues compared to standard fog generators (which leave visible marks on surfaces). A few micro-droplets may be observed under the device after activation — easily cleaned with warm water.

  • What does the smell like after activation?

The smoke smell is intentionally strong (close to burnt wood) — it's a key part of the dissuasive effect, creating a sense of urgency for the intruder. The smell persists 2 to 6 hours on fabrics and dissipates with extended ventilation (open windows 30-60 minutes).

  • What should I do if it accidentally activates while I'm home?

Wait for the ejection to finish (a few seconds), then open the windows wide to ventilate — this speeds up dissipation of the fog and its smell. The fog is certified non-toxic (food-grade glycol, tested by the University of Crete). For comfort, we simply recommend not deliberately triggering the device in an occupied, closed room.

  • Does the fog trigger smoke detectors?

No. It's not smoke — it's a glycol-based fog that doesn't trigger standard smoke detectors.

  • Is it legal?

Yes, fully legal for residential and commercial use. CE certified (RED directive 2014/53/EU).

  • Does it work without an alarm system?

Yes. Smoke-Defender is fully autonomous. A simple power outlet is enough. Triggered by remote control or SmartLife app.

  • How long to fill a room?

About 8 seconds for ~100 m³. Visibility drops to nearly zero.

  • How long does the fog last?

30 to 45 minutes. Open windows to speed up dissipation.

  • What area does the fog cover?

About 100 m³, roughly 45 m² with a standard 2.5m ceiling.

  • Can I trigger it from a smartphone?

Yes. The SmartLife app lets you instantly trigger the generator from your phone.

  • Can it be triggered during an assault?

Yes. Instant trigger via remote or panic button, widely used in shops.

  • Does it work without WiFi?

Yes. The No-WiFi Pack (€324.90) uses a wired 12V detector and 433 MHz RF plug. Ideal for garages, barns, holiday homes.

  • What is the SmartLife app for?

Manage the device, trigger remotely, create automated scenes, link other SmartLife/Tuya devices.

  • What's the difference between Tuya and SmartLife?

Tuya is the tech platform. SmartLife is the free mobile app to control your Tuya devices.

  • How does the motion detector work?

Tuya/SmartLife compatible. When motion is detected, it automatically triggers the fog via a SmartLife scene.

  • How to avoid false alarms?

Add a delay between detection and trigger, use the detector alone for alerts then trigger manually, or add a camera to verify.

  • What if I forget to deactivate when coming home?

With a 20-second delay, you get a notification and have time to cancel the scenario.

  • Can I use a door sensor?

Yes. Any Tuya-compatible sensor can be used as a trigger.

  • Is it compatible with Ajax alarm?

Yes. Via the Ajax Relay or WallSwitch module, integration takes 15 minutes through an Ajax Hub scenario. See the full Ajax integration guide →

  • Can I use multiple generators?

Yes, no limit. Each generator is independent and can trigger based on the intruder's movement. The panic effect is immediate.

  • How to install the generator?

Mount on the wall between 2.5 and 3 meters, plug it in, add it to SmartLife. About 30 minutes.

  • Where to position the generator?

High up (2.5 to 3m), nozzle aimed at the center and bottom of the room. Fog tends to rise.

  • How many triggers per cartridge?

One cartridge = one full trigger (~100 m³).

  • How to replace the cartridge?

Unscrew the housing with the included key, remove the old cartridge and insert the new one.

  • How much does a cartridge cost?

€59. Shelf life: 3 years. Very cost-effective compared to a monthly monitoring subscription.

  • Is there a subscription?

Never. One-time purchase, no monthly fees.

  • What is the warranty?

    2-year legal warranty of conformity.

  • Has the media covered Smoke-Defender?

Yes! TV report on France 3, Radio Bresse interview, Neozone article (10M+ readers).
